✅ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a MyDebit Chip & PIN transaction?
A transaction where you insert your MyDebit/ATM card into a POS terminal and enter your PIN to authorize payment. This replaces the older signature method and provides enhanced security.
What is a PIN?
A Personal Identification Number (PIN) is a secret 6-digit code used to verify your identity during transactions. It is the same PIN used for ATM cash withdrawals. Keep it confidential and never share it.
Why is PIN safer than a signature?
PINs are known only to the cardholder and encrypted during transmission, making them harder to forge. Signatures can be copied or faked, leading to higher fraud risk.
What happens if I enter the wrong PIN?
You have four attempts to enter the correct PIN. After four consecutive incorrect attempts, the chip on your card will be blocked for Chip & PIN transactions (though the magnetic stripe may still work). You will need to contact your bank for assistance.
Can I change my PIN?
PIN change policies vary by bank. Some banks allow PIN changes online or at ATMs, while others require contacting customer service. Check with your issuing bank for details.
What if I forget my PIN?
You can retrieve or reset your PIN by contacting your bank’s customer service or using their online PIN retrieval services if available. Banks will not provide your PIN over the phone for security reasons.
What if my card is declined at a Chip & PIN terminal?
Ensure your account has sufficient funds and that the terminal supports MyDebit Chip & PIN. If the problem persists, contact your bank for assistance.
Are Chip & PIN transactions accepted worldwide?
Most countries have adopted Chip & PIN technology, making your MyDebit card widely accepted. The card also contains a magnetic stripe for use at terminals that do not support chip technology.
What should I do to protect my PIN?
- Memorize your PIN; do not write it down.
- Never share your PIN with anyone.
- Cover the keypad when entering your PIN at POS terminals or ATMs.
- Be cautious of suspicious devices or people near the terminal.
What happens if the POS terminal does not support PIN entry?
Since July 2017, Malaysian banks no longer accept PIN bypass or signature verification for MyDebit transactions. Transactions at terminals without PIN support will be declined. Merchants must upgrade their POS systems to support Chip & PIN.
